How Does A Water Heater Work?

There are a lot of water heaters out there on the market. The most common by far are conventional tank storage water heaters. These water heaters are meant to heat water and save it for future use, the storage amount per tank varies but a common number is usually around 40 gallons of water. Whenever a fixture requires hot water, the supply is diminished from the tank and it will begin to work to replenish it.

The specifics aren’t too hard to understand; a water heater is connected to a cold water supply via the drip tube line. Cold water enters the tank from here, and makes it water towards the heating appliance to get ready for warming. How the tank heats the water depends, the two most common ways are through gas and electricity. In a gas heated-tank, a gas burner is lit under a metal chimney present in the middle of the tank. The burner produces toxic gas, which travels up the chimney and out of your home, while doing this heats the metal to an extremely hot temperature. The metal chimney then works to pass this heat on to the cold water present around it, heating your water for use.

An electric system works exactly the same way, the only difference is that it trades the chimney and gas burner for an electrical heating appliance instead. The electricity works to heat the water the same way the hot chimney would.
