Preventing a Clogged Sewer Line

Preventing a Clogged Sewer Line

A backed-up sewer line can cause serious damage to your home, and may even require costly repairs to your plumbing system. To prevent drain disasters from occurring, it is important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of a clogged sewer line.

Know The Warning Signs

The home’s drain and sewer system is organized like a tree with branches that lead to the main trunk line. This runs from the house to the sewer main. It will be isolated from the secondary line if there is a blockage in that line. If your bathroom sink is blocked and the toilet flushes normally, it will be isolated to that line. The problem may be with the mainline. If the toilet is clogged, wastewater could come from the basement’s floor drain, tub drain, or shower drain.

Slow drain emptying and gurgling sounds from the toilets can be signs your sewer system may be clogged. To identify and fix the problem, it is important to schedule a sewer inspection as soon as possible.

Preventative Sewer Line Maintenance

Many homeowners insurance policies don’t cover sewer line repairs or problems. In most cities, the homeowner is responsible for maintaining the line from the house to the main sewer by the street.

By keeping toilets clear of materials such as cotton swabs and feminine hygiene products, paper towels, and baby wipes, you can reduce the risk of sewer and drain clogs. These products would also include those marketed as “flushable”. It is harmful to the environment and can also cause damage inside the pipes if you pour paint, grease, oil, and other chemicals down your drain.

Tree root intrusion is the leading cause of sewer line backups. An inspection of the sewer and drain lines is inexpensive. It can identify potential problems such as tree root intrusions, broken or disconnected pipes, and debris buildup. Your plumber will have many tools available to repair or clear the problem if it is found. These include rodding, water-jetting, and trenchless sewer line repair. The repair will be successful if a follow-up video camera inspection is done.
